Finch was born in La Mirada Calif. and began playing softball at 5. Doug Finch, the father of Jennie was her very first pitching trainer. Jennie could begin playing with his Finch Windmill arm conditioning device when she was 10, which was the age at which she began using it. As a high schooler, she threw six perfect games and 13 no-hitters. As a college student, she earned the distinction of being a University of Arizona All-American first baseman as well as pitcher. Additionally, she was awarded the Honda Award as the nation's most outstanding softball player in 2001 when the Wildcats took home the title of national champions and in 2002.
